Last week we talked about how what you do TODAY is what matters most. It isn’t what you have done or didn’t do, it’s what you do each and every today.

And then I mentioned that getting started is often the hardest part.

I think this is because most of the time we think of accomplishing a dream and think of all the pieces that go into it and the time it will take, so it feels overwhelming.

And we often choose to dwell on the hardest parts.

I tell my clients not to worry about the hard parts yet.

Instead, I recommend two strategies, which can really help start getting us into momentum.

I like to ask my clients – what is just ONE thing you can do in the direction of your dream. Just one thing. It doesn’t to have a significant contribution to the overall goal (in fact it shouldn’t), just one little thing.

There are probably lots of little things that you can do. Now just do one of them.

Then, I like to ask you to brainstorm a number of little tasks you can do.

Yes, I’m a list maker and have always loved lists (my mother was obsessed with them). The great thing about a list of little things is that when you have time to complete some, you don’t have to think about what to do or where in your process you left off. You just pick one and do it.

if you can’t think of any small things, think about one big thing and then break that down into smaller steps. Possibly even subdivide those – now you have a little thing.

It feels so good to get started and know that you are working toward it. Even if it takes 10 years to get there, where will you be in 10 years if you don’t do them???

Next week we will talk about scheduling.

PS. Sometimes it’s fun to put on the list things we’ve already done for our dream and cross them off, to show we’ve already made progress!

  1. Yes I did resonate with this post. My small little thing to start on will be to stop struggling with my time.

  2. If you’re into making lists, I would recommend a fun book called The Sunday List of Dreams by Kris Radish.

  3. Great goal…what specific action(s) are you going to take to accomplish that?

  4. Great issue! Love that you call breaking big goals down into ‘little things’– makes them seem like no big deal and way more doable. Also i live by lists! I have a few going all the time. Dont think i would be able to accomplish half as much without them. Maybe it’s in my genes : )

  5. lol, yes, it’s strong in the Boice family. I know I’m not serious about getting things done if I don’t have a list. We need to schedule your next session.
